Oil painting--what is the most basic/necessary preparation before beginning a project on canvas?

i never took art classes but did an oil painting on canvas awhile back with no preparation. just took a paintbrush and went at it...it came out fine. but i researched afterward and found quite a bit of preparation-practically made my head spin!

what is necessary and what isn't for a good finished project? what is gesso, do i need it? etc etc...Oil painting--what is the most basic/necessary preparation before beginning a project on canvas?
Yeah if your canvas is already covered with gesso, you don't need to prep it any further.

Just draw out your sketch and start painting. :)Oil painting--what is the most basic/necessary preparation before beginning a project on canvas?
Pick a subject. Draw it. Paint it.

Paint all the darkest darks first, then work your want toward the lightest light in degrees. Thin dark paint, thick light paint.

Gesso is used to cover the canvas. These days most canvases come with it already painted on. No you don't need it.
